If my baby is born in August, will she be able to start school when she turns 5? Or will she have to wait?
My 1st born in Jan — I know he can start.
My 2nd born in July — I think she can start??

I don’t have any school age children but my oldest is 21 months born August 12th. I was under the understanding that for public schools your child can start school if they are 5 at the start of the school. The school year normally start in September or late August here in Philadelphia.

@Raven822,
School teacher here. Most public schools the cutoff is either the end of July or August 1. This is for Missouri though. I’m currently going through this with my first born. You would just have to reach out to the district you are in to find out their protocols.

@higginsca7,
same in Arkansas. My two bonus babies are both also born in August and they have to wait. My daughter will be 5 August 14 and has another year of Pre K before she can go to Kindergarten

It depends on your state age requirement. I know someone who has a son was born August 2 and he’ll have to wait an entire year since he missed the cut off , even by one day.

@tmarks13,
I was going to say this about my nephew, but the cutoff was September 1st and he was born the 3rd. (I think my sister fudged his birthday tbh)

I’m in Michigan, our cutoff for starting kindergarten was 5 by sept 3 or something similar. I have a 5 year old son born sept 13 and i signed a waiver this past year for him to start kindergarten since he was 10 days after the cutoff and It was fine.

Most states they CAN start but as a teacher, I always recommend waiting a year if you have the option. They mature so much and are so much more ready for school. My students that were the youngest in the class (June-August birthdays) were always the ones who struggled the most.

I’m having a boy and we’ll be starting a year later when he is technically 6 (unless I homeschool). He’ll be one of the oldest in his class, but I’d prefer that over being the youngest. Girls are usually okay to start, from what I hear from teachers (specifically experience with my younger brother and my MIL who is a kindergarten teacher), but boys tend to do better with extra time. I do have a friend whose daughter was born in late June (going into 3rd grade now) and she wishes she’d have waited one more year to start her but there’s no way to really know that until they’re in school.

I just looked it up for my state (Kansas), they can start kindergarten as long as they turn 5 before August 31st.
Here’s to hoping baby girl doesn’t come late lol

I’m in the south and it was such a shock to hear that most boys are fully 6 when they start kindergarten. I’m not from here originally so it was weird to me. But now that I’m having a boy I’m totally going to wait since pretty much everyone else does.

My daughter is 9 years old, born Aug 5th, and we waited a year and are so glad we did. We'll definitely be doing the same for this next one.

In Colorado the cut off date is October 1st. I’m due late August too. I’m glad we made the cut off date. My state offers free preschool so my baby will be going to preschool before kindergarten. I have my 4yo who will be 5 tomorrow go to pre school this past year and she is more than ready for kindergarten. I also have a 3yo that will follow suit.
