Fresh Ginger Ice Cream

There are nights that you want to pick up takeout, but you’re actually too tired to leave the house. This happens to me more often than I would like to admit.

On those occasions, sometimes it’s a lifesaver to be able to whip something up at home. You can stay in your pajamas and spend more time with the family, rather than running around out in the world trying to find dinner. Am I the only person who makes dinner in their pajamas? On second thought, don’t answer that.

So, plan ahead for nights like this. Get your coupon for $2 off one InnovAsian entree!

And while you’re at it, you can pick up the ingredients for some fresh ginger ice cream, too.

I picked up everything I needed at Walmart. The InnovAsian entrees and sides are located in the frozen foods section.

Not only do they taste as good as takeout, but they take 20 minutes or less to prepare, so that means more time for you to enjoy with your family. You’ll love the all white meat chicken and crisp, fresh-tasting vegetables. I certainly enjoyedhow easy it was to prepare, too!

Afterwards, you can finishoff your meal with a cup of fresh ginger ice cream. It’s lightly flavored with ginger and a kiss of cinnamon and vanilla.

Tips for Making Fresh Ginger Ice Cream

  • The longer the ginger sits in the ice cream base, the more ginger flavor you’ll get in your ice cream. Let it sit for a few hours for a lighter flavor, or overnight for a stronger flavor. Either way is delicious.
  • If you love ginger, try garnishing the ice cream with bits of candied ginger.
  • This ice cream can be served soft, right out of the ice cream maker, or you can freeze it overnight for firmer ice cream.

It’s quite subtle, and very balanced by the vanilla and cinnamon. I can’t wait to try it with pumpkin pie in the fall.

Your homemade ginger ice cream sounds divine! I have heard people talk about how great it is to cleanse the palate after a meal, but I have never had the chance to try it myself. Plus, thanks for recommending InnovASIAN! My husband loves Chinese food and had seen these at Walmart but he is always wary of frozen foods. Now I can tell him how much he will actually love these!

That ice cream looks absolutely amazing. Ginger is one of my favorite flavors and I don’t think I have ever had ginger ice cream–this summer it’s going to be on my bucket list. We love Chinese food as well but are trying to find healthier versions of our favorites so I will have to look into your suggestions.

FAQs

How do you get the most flavor out of fresh ginger? ›

Gingerol undergoes another change during the dehydration process, transforming into the compound shogaol. This causes the spice level to double. So if you really enjoy the burn of fresh ginger and want even more, dehydrate your ginger and mince it or even grind it for an extremely potent and powerful flavoring.

Is ginger good in ice cream? ›

Fresh ginger root and candied ginger give this silky, custard-based ice cream an intense spice flavor. Don't overlook the clove, which adds a deep, woodsy note. You can make this ice cream up to a week ahead, but after that it will start to develop ice crystals.

What is the difference between ginger and crystallized ginger? ›

But what is the difference between fresh ginger and crystallized ginger? Essentially, crystallized ginger is cooked and candied fresh ginger. They have very similar flavors but entirely different uses.

Is candied ginger the same as fresh ginger? ›

Candied ginger is sold in slices, chunks, and little crumbles. It is fresh ginger that has been simmered in a sugar syrup until cooked and candied, and then is dried and usually tossed in granulated sugar to prevent clumping.

What brings out the Flavour of ginger? ›

However, when ginger is dried or slightly heated, gingerol goes through a dehydration process, which forms shogaols – compounds about twice as spicy as gingerol! This explains why when dry, ginger has a much stronger pungency to it than fresh ginger.

How do you get the most out of raw ginger? ›

Pop a slice of fresh, raw ginger in your mouth to help soothe a tummy ache and indigestion. Steep chopped raw ginger in boiling water to make an immune-boosting, throat-soothing tea. Cook fresh ginger by mincing it up and tossing it into stir-fries, soups, and baked treats.

When should you not use fresh ginger? ›

Other visual cues that indicate it's time to toss the ginger include blemishes or mold on the exterior or cut ends, or a discolored interior (dark yellow, brown, gray cast) when sliced. Texture: Fresh ginger is firm, so if it's soft or mushy to the touch, it's a tell-tale sign that the ginger has gone bad.

Is powdered ginger just as good as fresh ginger? ›

Ginger Root Versus Ginger Powder

Both forms contain all the health benefits of ginger. Though it's hard to beat the flavor of the fresh root, ginger powder is nutritious, convenient and economical. Fresh ginger lasts a while in the refrigerator and can be frozen after you have peeled and chopped it.

Is too much crystallized ginger bad for you? ›

If you're a woman, try not to exceed 25 grams. Just one serving of crystallized ginger contains 30 grams of sugars, which is higher than the recommended maximum daily intake for women. As Harvard Health Publishing notes, excess sugar consumption may put you at risk for diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular problems.

Which is the best ginger in the world? ›

Buderim Ginger - The World's Finest Ginger.

Why is fresh ginger so expensive? ›

COVID-19-driven demand has caused a world-wide ginger shortage.

How to get the most nutrients out of ginger? ›

To get all the goodness of the ginger, let the slices steep for at least 10 minutes. Ginger tea is a healthier alternative to ginger ale, ginger beer and other commercial canned or bottled ginger beverages. These drinks provide ginger's benefits, but many contain a lot of sugar.

How do you get the most juice out of ginger root? ›

Blend the ginger root until it turns into a pulp. Then, strain the pulp through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to extract the ginger juice. You can also use a garlic press to extract the juice from the ginger root. Simply place a small piece of ginger in the press and squeeze it until the juice comes out.

Is it better to eat raw ginger or cooked ginger? ›

Eat it raw or cook it—both are healthy: Research suggests that heating raw ginger (i.e., in cooking or making tea) reduces its ability to scavenge certain types of free radicals and increases its ability to scavenge other types—likely due to the conversion of gingerols to shogaols.

Does ginger get stronger when cooked? ›

Cooking it will dampen the flavor. So if you're after the zingy kick, at it right at the end of the cooking. Some parts of the ginger root could be stronger, so make sure to taste it first before you use it in a dish.
