What version of the Bible does the Episcopal lectionary use? ›

New Revised Standard Version Bible (NRSV) – The Episcopal Church.

The first set of "semicontinuous" OT readings follows major stories/themes, beginning in Year A with Genesis and ending in Year C with the later prophets. "Complementary" OT readings follow the historical tradition of thematically pairing the OT reading with the Gospel reading.

The Principal Service Lectionary (which is drawn from the Revised Common Lectionary) is intended for use at the principal service of the day (whether this service is Holy Communion or some other authorized form).

A Lectionary provides the readings and the responsorial psalm assigned for each Mass of the year (Sundays, weekdays, and special occasions). The readings are divided by the day or the theme (baptism, marriage, vocations, etc.)

The Episcopal Church describes itself as "Protestant, yet catholic" and asserts apostolic succession, tracing its bishops back to the apostles via holy orders.

The translations of the Bible authorized for use in the worship of the Episcopal Church are the King James (Authorized Version), together with the Marginal Readings authorized for use by the General Convention of 1901, the English Revision of 1881, the American Revision of 1901, the Revised Standard Version of 1952, ...

Methodists and Presbyterians often follow the Lectionary. Baptists rarely do, their objection being that any lectionary discourages imagination and inspiration.

Since May 19, 2002, the revised Lectionary, based on the New American Bible is the only English-language Lectionary that may be used at Mass in the dioceses of the United States, except for the current Lectionary for Masses with Children which remains in use.

The practice of having specific texts for a specific day began as early as the fourth century and continues to our present day. Over the year there have been different versions of lectionaries (see below for history) and today we use the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) for the Episcopal Church.

The Church Year begins with Advent in November/December. We are presently in Year A of readings in the Revised Common Lectionary. There are no Lectionary Readings from the books of 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Obadiah, and Nahum. Readings from the Apocrypha are not included.

Why does the lectionary skip verses? ›

Answer: The Lectionary version of Scripture has always had some readings that were shortened or which edited out certain passages. This was for a variety of reasons, but this is because the requirements of liturgical reading are different from the requirements of academic study or personal spiritual reading.

Mark is the earliest gospel written, probably, shortly after the war that destroyed the Temple, the war between Rome and Judea. And Mark presents one type of Jesus with a particular narrative where Jesus begins in the Galilee and he ends his life in Jerusalem.

The canons of the Episcopal Church recognize the KJV as “the historic Bible of this Church.” However, it is also generally recognized today that the KJV has serious defects, especially in its use of inferior Hebrew and Greek texts.

In the Catholic Mass, the Lectionary readings are excerpts of the books of the Bible arranged for the Liturgy of the Word. The liturgical readings and responsorial psalms for the Dioceses of the United States use the revised translation of the Revised New American Bible (RNAB).

The original Anglican Bible was the so-called King James Bible, the Authorised Version. It exists in the original, and also as several modern revised versions. The Jerusalem Bible and the New English Bible are more recent translations.
