Changing of the guard: The new USWNT faces that are taking over

At the forefront of the new generation of US players hoping to lead the nation back to glory are the 2022 and 2023 U.S. Soccer Female Players of the Year Sophia Smith and Naomi Girma.

There are few defenders on the pitch more talented than 23-year-old Girma, and much will be expected of her as she heads into just her third year on the full National Team. The 2023 FIFA World Cup was her first-ever championship at a senior level yet by the end of 2023 she was one of the first names on the team sheet, finishing third on the USWNT for minutes on the pitch.

Having taken the U.S. Player of the Year award the year ahead of Girma in 2022, Smith was nominated again in 2023 after leading the National Women’s Soccer League in scoring for the year with 11 goals in 16 games.

During the regular season, she became the third player in history to record two hat tricks in a single season, after Sam Kerr and Kristen Hamilton. The historic games came less than two months apart.

Trinity Rodman started all 19 matches she appeared in during the 2023 season and became the youngest player in National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) history to record 10 assists and 10 goals in a regular season. At 21 years old, she is only going to get better.

Emily Fox and Crystal Dunn were also standout players in 2023 who started in every match at the Women’s World Cup.

18-year-old Olivia Moultrie is another player who is quickly progressing with the national team. Her strong performances during the season were recognised when she was named 2023 Chipotle Young Female Player of the Year.

The Utah native dominated in the U-20 scene and was one of the USA’s top players at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in 2022. She earned her first cap for the USWNT in December 2023.

Can the USA bounce back from a surprise exit at the 2023 World Cup to win Olympic gold?

The USWNT will be desperate to return to former glories after a shocking round-of-16 knockout in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

As one of the powerhouses of women’s soccer, the American women would often enter tournaments as the top-seeded team.

Victory in the World Cup would have seen them become the first team to ever win three consecutive world titles, but their shock defeat by Sweden on penalties left them licking their wounds as they were dumped out of the tournament. It was the first time ever the USA failed to reach a World Cup podium.

Now the USWNT is switching gears as they prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics as four-time winners and Tokyo 2020 bronze medalists.

The new generation will be on full display as they attempt to reclaim their position as the world's most dominant female football team.
